Water Heater Repair in Kitchener

Most water heaters that stop working have not died. They have one failed part, and the whole trick of a repair call is telling that apart from a tank that is genuinely finished, before you have paid for either.

A water heater call in Kitchener starts with three questions: gas or electric, how old, and is the water on the floor coming from a fitting or from the tank itself. The answers sort most jobs before anyone opens a toolbag. A fitting leak, a pilot problem or a dead element on a tank under ten years old is a repair. Water weeping from the seam of the tank is not, because the steel has rusted through from the inside and no part fixes that.

Gas tanks: what usually fails

  • Pilot will not stay lit. On an older atmospheric tank this is almost always the thermocouple, a cheap part that tells the gas valve the pilot is burning. On newer tanks with a sealed combustion chamber it can be the flame sensor, the igniter or a tripped thermal cut-off, which on some models trips because the air intake screen under the tank is clogged with lint and dust.
  • Burner lights but water is lukewarm. Often a failing gas valve or thermostat, sometimes a dip tube that has broken and is letting cold water mix at the top of the tank, and sometimes simply a tank too small for a household that has grown.
  • Power-vent fan runs but no ignition. A pressure switch, a blocked vent termination outside, or a control board. Power-vent tanks have more electronics and more things to diagnose, which is why the diagnosis is done before the quote.
  • Rumbling and popping. Sediment. Kitchener's water is hard, and the mineral layer on the bottom of the tank traps water that boils under it. A flush helps if the layer is not yet rock; if the tank has never been flushed in twelve years, it is often too late.

Electric tanks

Electric heaters are simpler and their faults are more predictable: a failed upper or lower element, a thermostat, a tripped high-limit reset button, or a breaker. Lukewarm water that runs out quickly is usually the lower element; no hot water at all is usually the upper element or the high-limit. Elements in this water scale up and burn out faster than the manufacturer imagined, and a softener or a low-watt-density element extends the interval. The 240-volt connection is the Electrical Safety Authority's domain and is handled accordingly.

Leaks

Leaks are the call that needs honesty most. Water at the top of the tank is a fitting, a flex connector, the cold inlet or the temperature and pressure relief valve, all repairable. A dripping relief valve can also be a sign that the house pressure is too high or that there is no expansion tank, which is a plumbing fix rather than a water heater fix. Water from the bottom of the jacket, with no fitting above it, is the tank. We will say so on the spot rather than sell a repair that lasts a week.

Rental tanks

If your tank is a rental, repairs are usually the rental company's responsibility under the contract, and the first call should be to them. Where the rental company's response is slow or the tank is near the end of its life, we can price a buy-out and replacement so you can compare properly.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can someone come for no hot water?

Most no-hot-water calls in Kitchener are looked at within a day, and the common parts for gas and electric tanks travel on the truck. Calls are taken seven days a week. We do not promise a time we cannot keep, so you will be told a realistic window when you call.

Is it worth repairing a 12-year-old tank?

Sometimes. A cheap part on an otherwise sound tank buys time, and time is useful if you are planning a basement unit or a tankless conversion and would rather replace once. A costly part on a tank that age is usually money better put toward a new one. We lay out both numbers.

Can you flush the sediment out?

If the tank still drains freely, yes, and it quiets the rumbling and improves recovery. If the drain valve is blocked or the sediment has hardened, a flush does little, and we will say so rather than charge for it.
